menagerie
It occurs to me that I have too many peeves to have a or even a few pet peeves. Amongst my menagerie of peeves is one that happened a few minutes ago. This is a relatively new one. Why, when I respond that I do not own the store, or it is not my shop or that the place does not belong to me that the question does not get followed up? It is the proverbial wind being taken out of the sails moment. What is the special thing that you can only ask or discuss with someone who "owns" the store? What do you want, am I no longer good enough to talk to or do you feel that I can not do you any favors if I do not own the shop. I admit you will garner little by being in my good graces but you can't know that. In truth it might be protecting me from many an uninteresting if not aggravating conversation but I am just mystified by the sudden about face when shame of my not owning the place is spoken aloud.

You can say yes ... why not? What does it matter to them really? Unless they are with the government ...
ReplyDeleteI think you will find the conversations that follow 'Are you the owner?' less than engaging. People ask because they want to sell you something, complain, or tell you how wonderful your job must be ....
Oh, and they also want to see how everything is going ... like you just lost a loved one or have recently been released from the nut house.
